G324 - Lyric Analysis and their importance

 I analysed the lyrics to another song (that is not the one that I am creating a music video for) because this will be useful as it will help me to understand how a song can be interpreted in different ways. For example, how I see and understand these lyrics may completely contrast the final video that is created by the artist who wrote the song.

Lucy Rose - Shiver

(This first verse suggests that she is singing about a relationship which does have it's problems, but they can be dealt with.)

 And I loved the way you looked at me
And I miss the way you made me feel
When we were alone
When we were alone
("When we were alone" Is sung like an add on after this section of the chorus. This suggests that the person Lucy Rose is singing about changed their behaviour from when they were alone together to when they were around other people.)

 And I'll shiver like I used to
And I'll leave him just for you
And I'll shiver like I used to
Just for you
(Implies that, despite the problems with their relationship, she is still completely devoted to this person.)

 And we stole
Every moment we had to make the other one feel bad
And we hoped that we could be what we knew
We'd never turn out to be real
(The last two lines of this verse could mean that they wanted to be a couple that are perfect for one another, like the 'Ideal', but in the final line they admit to themselves that this is very rare and that everybody has their flaws.)

(This could mean that Lucy Rose feels, If they could go back in time and repeat their relationship, would she want something to be done differently/could something be done differently.)

Like I used to
(The entire song is written in past tense as though this relationship has either ended or they've been in this relationship for a long time and are reflecting back on how they once were.)

Music Video for Lucy Rose's - Shiver



The music video for this song shows an old man visiting various places at a village and beach, looking around as if he has been there before. Cut into these shots of the old man are shots of a young woman (Played by the artist Lucy Rose) who is seen in the same location as the old man is beforehand. This makes the audience question who is filming the young woman,  the young man who is filming her is only seen once. Taking from the lyrics that the song is written in past tense about a relationship it can be assumed that the shots of the young woman are flashbacks that the old man is having from being in these specific locations. This idea of flashbacks is emphasised/shown through the fact that the shots of the old man are wide screen and clearly using modern cameras, whereas the shots of the young woman are edited to look as though an older camera has been used (for example the shot is a square in the middle of the screen with, what appear to be, marks on the film appearing occasionally and the colours are much more muted with little variety).

The Lyrics match well with the music video as well as further developing the meaning behind the lyrics. These visuals in the video don't change the meaning of the song, it makes it more clear and understandable.
