Andrew Goodwin's theory suggests there are seven key feature in music videos.
1 - Demonstrate genre characteristics.
| Juicy J - "Show Out": Rap/Hip Hop videos tend to have expensive surroundings (in this case a private jet) and lots of attractive women surrounding the male artist. |
2 - Relationship between lyrics and visuals.
| Queen's video for I'm Going Slightly Mad - Lyrics and visuals paired here as Freddie Mercury sings "I think I'm a banana tree." |
3 - Relationships between music and visuals.
4 - The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-up of the artist.
| Jessie J's music video for "Wild" featured Big Sean and Dizzee Rascal so there is probably more focus on having close-up shots of Jessie J to keep some focus on her. |
5 - The artist may develop motifs or iconography that recur across their work (a visual style).
(E.g. Lady Gaga is known for her different and strange clothing in videos)
| Bad Romance |
| Telephone |
| Applause |
| Judas |
| You And I |
6 - Frequent reference to the notion of 'looking' (screens within screens, filming, cameras) and particularly voyeuristic (pleasure through looking) treatment of the female body.
| Shakira and Rihanna - Can't Remember to Forget You |
7 - There are often intertexual references.
| Blink 182 "All The Small Things" - is a parody of other music videos and the video makes very obvious references to these other music videos. |
